Apostle Paul said- "And I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I am loved."
I know for most of us the thought of loving, and being rejected is extremely painful... everything within us rebels, and we wonder if it's even possible to love when we are not loved in return.
We get hurt, our hearts break like tiny shards of glass, and we withdraw.... from the very sight of anything that could make us hurt more, and when someone offers us love we enter cautiously, ever ready to back out at the slightest hint of betrayal.
So we go through life with a wall around our heart... never letting anyone come close enough to hurt us, and pushing all hopes of friendship away. It just hurts too much.
Sometimes we even say we've forgiven, and we try to go on, but buried underneath, the open wound still lies... and it forbids us to love with abandon.
Yet God tells us to love like He has loved us.... how is that even possible?
Well, what's helped me tremendously is to think- we all make mistakes... I've hurt people. We are all works in progress, and none of us have arrived. So let us strive to love with abandon... to give willingly of our love, even if it means not being loved in return. God is the Healer of all wounds, and He will help you love again...
"By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren." -1 John 3:16
