Some people say that all it takes to be a hero is good looks and a small amount of good deeds; to be able to talk convincingly and win over the people. For some reason when we think hero we automatically think of all the lights, the cheering crowds, but over the years I’ve learned differently. You see, I come in contact with them every day, heroes I mean, and there is no fanfare. No spotlight and no medals for valor. They are simple, ordinary men and women that live out the idea of putting others first; of laying down their lives for the people around them.
Nothing fancy; no death defying acts of courage, no
Spiderman moves, just day to day actions: helping an old woman across the street. Reassuring a small child who is frightened. Helping a blind person find his way, or sharing some of their bounty with a homeless person sitting on the corner.
I think we all expect Peter Parker to come flying down from the top of the skyscrapers to save us, I think we all envision Captain America when we mention the word hero, but what if that isn't what it is all about? What if being a hero lies only in the state of our hearts? What if it is something so much more. So much deeper? something so real and personal that we have forgotten what being a hero truly means? I know I have.
but I've met some of those heroes. and so today I want to thank them for all they do. For shining so brightly in a world that will forever push them down. I want to thank them for being willing to go unnoticed so that they might do what truly counts. I want to thank them for the small words of encouragement they give just when you need it; for the flowers and smiles. For the prayers and friendship. thank you.
I hope you're enjoying the weather; maybe take a deep breath of the flowers next time you're outside.
